The facilities group has some new equipment they want to connect to the data network, and asks IT for a range of IP addresses. They do not provide a description of the IP stack for either the hardware or the supporting applications, and have no idea how to get it. A query to the manufacturer results in "all you have to do is configure the IP and subnet mask", and the documentation was written with an electrician in mind.

IT needs to perform a threat & risk assessment on the equipment and software, however, nobody in the IT group has any idea what protocols are embedded, and finds the MAC address is not even documented on the hardware. The equipment requires the deployment of both a database server and a support PC to host the administrative application, however, there is no documentation for how to firewall it or segregate it from the data network, and nobody has any idea what will happen in production if the firewall is port scanned or otherwise attacked.
